What is Mindset?

The concept of mindset has evolved somewhat over the past 30 years. In general terms, mindset is a set of beliefs that shape your way of thinking or your mental attitude about yourself and the world around you.

Mindset is a combination of your attitudes, beliefs, thoughts, emotions, and assumptions. These aren’t just your conscious thoughts, but also your subconscious thoughts.

Your mindset impacts how you interact with others; how you perceive and react to all situations; whether you achieve success or not; how you cope with challenging times, and how you choose to life your day-to-day life.

Your mindset influences all decisions you make about your thoughts, words, and actions. It also impacts your relationships with yourself and others.

This is why mindset is everything. Your mindset can make you, or break you. You can choose to have an “I can…” mindset or an “I can’t…” mindset.

If you have a positive mindset toward yourself and your life, you will be able to pursue your dreams in a confident and courageous manner. You will be able to accept life’s defeats and learn from them. You will develop healthy, strong relationships with people.

If you have a negative mindset toward yourself and your life, you will likely have problems with motivation, procrastination, and acceptance. You will have a poor me attitude and blame your circumstances on the world around you. You will believe you never get a break instead of going out and doing what it takes to get a break.

Therefore, if you have a positive, healthy mindset, your words, thoughts, and actions will support a happy and productive life.

Growth Mindset vs Fixed Mindset

Carol Dweck, a top Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, first coined the terms growth mindset and fixed mindset in 2007. After decades of research, she developed a theory that students have underlying beliefs about their learning and intelligence.

If students believe they can get smarter and do better in life, they are motivated to work harder. This helps them accomplish more in life.

If students believe they are not able to get smarter and do better in life, they struggle with the learning process and lack motivation to put forth more effort. This leads to a lack of success in life.

Science now shows that we can change the way our brains think and feel due to something called neuroplasticity. Your brain is a muscle and you can exercise it to grow and improve it. As a result if you believe you can change your circumstances and outcome, you will work harder to accomplish your dreams.

This is why mindset is everything. You need to believe in yourself and have a positive mindset. And in order to get there, you need to have a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset.

Carol Dweck describes growth mindset as “…the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts. Although people may differ in every which way in their initial talents and aptitudes, interests, or temperaments, everyone can change and grow through application and experience.”

She describes a fixed mindset as “… people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort.”

We now know that Dweck’s theories about growth and fixed mindset apply to the adult world too because we know people often grow up with the mindsets that were established in childhood.

But we can change our mindsets. That’s why it’s important to understand that mindset is everything and you can grow, change, and be the master of your life rather than accept whatever comes your way.

“The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset. This is the mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives.”
