Adventure Mindset After 50: Why Trying New Things Changes Everything
Years ago, I thought we were supposed to try new things and have an adventure mindset as young women—I never considered that I would develop an adventure mindset after 50!
My husband and I have travelled and tried new things more since we turned 50 than we ever did when we were younger. Looking back, we simply didn’t have the time or resources for adventurous activities when we were younger—there were houses to buy, cars to maintain, daycare costs, and a calendar full of our kids’ sports, dance, and every other activity imaginable. Adventure wasn’t even on the radar.

So here I am now—the founder of Sassy Sister Stuff, writing about how it’s time for us to live our best, most vibrant lives as middle-aged and senior women! And explaining why an adventure mindset after 50 is healthy for your mind, body, and soul. What do you think? Are you up for it? Let’s discover what it’s all about…
How to Cultivate an Adventure Mindset after 50
An adventure mindset after 50 involves cultivating curiosity, courage, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone through new experiences, hobbies, and travel. It’s a conscious decision to focus on personal growth and meaningful experiences rather than limitations.
By embracing reinvention, learning new skills, becoming more active, and connecting with others, you can live a more fulfilling life and challenge age-related stereotypes.

Embrace new experiences and activities
Once you decide that it’s time to develop an adventure mindset, you will want to embrace new experiences and activities. You can travel, but you can also enjoy many memorable experiences close to home. You can take up new hobbies, explore local events, or dive into learning opportunities.
These are some ideas for developing that mindset:
- Travel: Explore new countries, cities, or even local areas you’ve never visited. Try local delicacies, engage with locals, and step outside of traditional tourist paths to create unique stories and memories.
- Outdoor adventures: Go hiking, birdwatching, kayaking, or cycling. Try geocaching, a modern-day treasure hunt, or join a walking or running club.
- Creative and learning opportunities: Take an online course, learn a new language, or pick up a new skill like coding, mixology, or gardening.
- Community involvement: Join a book club, volunteer for a cause you care about, join local theater, or become a docent at a museum or park.
- Plan with purpose: Plan adventures that align with your interests and abilities, and travel with a sense of purpose rather than just rushing to see things. Travel with confidence so you can enjoy the experience.

Stay physically active
Naturally, part of being adventurous is staying physically active. While some of us have chronic health issues that prevent us from running a marathon or swimming five miles, we can all stay active in some way. Walking after dinner or using a stationary bike a few times a week is sufficient for some of us. The idea is to keep moving your body.
These are some ideas that will help you stay active:
- Find a sport you enjoy: Try something new like pickleball, rock climbing, or disc golf, or re-engage with an old favorite. Other options include yoga, tai chi, or swimming.
- Focus on movement: Staying active is key to happiness and health. Even small, daily changes can make a big difference.
- Join a club: Connect with others and find motivation by joining a walking, running, or other sports club.
- Go to an indoor pool: Aqua exercises are one of the best activities for aging bodies. The water helps protect you and makes it easier to move, while creating a degree of friction.

Start small (and don’t compare yourself to others)
You don’t need to take on big, intense activities to embrace an adventurous lifestyle. Start with simple movements that feel good for your body and build from there. A 10-minute walk, gentle stretching, or a few laps in the pool all count. What matters is consistency, not perfection.
And remember—your journey is yours. Let go of comparisons and honor the pace that works for you. Every step, no matter how small, moves you toward more confidence, strength, and freedom.
