Book Nook Decor, Accessories, and Ideas for a Calm Corner

I received the cutest email today about Book Nook decor! It immediately made me think about the article I wrote about creating a calm corner, also known as an Emotional Escape Space.

A Book Nook can be established just about anywhere in your home. It serves as a space for you to read and relax comfortably.

When you are sitting in your book nook, it also says to family members that this is your quiet time and you should not be interrupted.

This quiet time is essential for your self-care and well-being. You need to calm your nervous system and your mind.

And, you can easily incorporate a Book Nook into your Calm Corner with some cute accessories and decor.

Ironically, I have been rereading and watching the show, Outlander, by Diana Gabaldon. I was inspired by my recent trip to Chicago to meet three of the major stars of the television series. I’ve been reading the books for more than 10 years and watching the TV series for 7 seasons.

I wish I had created a book nook before I started reading so my family would know NOT to interrupt me! I just loved the idea when I saw my email today.

Let’s learn more about book nooks and look at some book nook ideas and decor. I am not an affiliate for any of these products. I am writing this article purely to complement my articles about a Calm Corner and a Meditation Space and to share the ideas with you:)

Why Do You Need a Book Nook?

In a world that rarely slows down, creating a peaceful place to escape is more than a luxury—it’s a necessity.

A cozy book nook isn’t just about reading; it’s about reclaiming your calm.

It’s your personal pause button, a sacred little corner where stress melts away, and your imagination takes the lead.

Whether you’re flipping through your favorite novel, journaling your thoughts, or simply sipping tea in silence, a book nook gives you permission to be still.

It’s a space that nurtures your well-being, sparks joy, and reminds you that taking time for yourself is not selfish—it’s essential.

For women navigating the beautiful chaos of midlife, a book nook can feel like a mini-retreat—your own quiet rebellion against the noise of the world.

And let’s be honest, having a dedicated spot that’s all yours (and maybe a little sassy!) makes self-care feel that much sweeter.

How to Choose the Perfect Spot for Your Book Nook

The best book nooks aren’t necessarily big—they’re intentional. When choosing your spot, think comfort, quiet, and charm.

Look for a little corner that feels like it’s just waiting to be transformed. A sunny window seat, a corner of your bedroom, a spot under the stairs, or even an unused closet can become a dreamy retreat with a little love.

Ask yourself: Where do I feel most at ease? Where can I sneak away for “me time” without interruption?

If you just plain do not have any extra space, do like I do when our house is full—I create my book nook on my bed. I make my bed, throw all the pillows on it, bring my tea upstairs, open the window blinds, grab a lightweight throw blankie and headphones, kick off my shoes, light a candle on the bedside table, and make myself comfy on the bed with my favorite book!

Once you’ve found your space, it’s time to work some magic—and remember, your nook doesn’t need to be Pinterest-perfect. It just needs to feel like you.

Cozy Book Nook Decor Ideas (Even for Small Spaces!)

Decor and accessories are the things that turn a reading corner into a full-on mood. Start with soft textures—think plush pillows, layered blankets, and a comfy chair or floor cushion.

Add warm lighting with a small lamp, fairy lights, or a flickering flameless candle to create that golden-hour glow, even after sunset.

Want to make it feel special? Style a small shelf or basket with a few of your favorite books, a plant or two for life and color, and maybe a framed quote that speaks to your soul.

Does this sound like a Calm Corner or Emotional Escape Space? It sure does—similar ideas, decor, and accessories!

Mirrors can make small spaces feel bigger, and curtains or a folding screen can give you a sense of separation—even in a shared room.

Pro Tip: Stick to calming colors or patterns that make you exhale just looking at them.

Must-Have Accessories to Elevate Your Reading Retreat

Let’s take your nook from cozy to completely irresistible. Here are some accessories that will level up your calm corner:

  • A soft throw blanket – because what’s reading without a snuggle?
  • A cute side table or tray – perfect for holding your tea, glasses, or current read.
  • Noise-canceling headphones or a white noise machine – for tuning out the world.
  • A diffuser or candle – lavender, eucalyptus, or vanilla can turn your nook into a spa moment.
  • A journal – because sometimes a good read inspires great thoughts.
  • A reading light – soft and adjustable so you can read for just one more chapter.
  • A book stand or lap pillow – comfort is queen, and your hands deserve a break too.

You don’t need to spend a fortune—many of these can be found on a budget, repurposed, or thrifted.

What matters most is creating a space that feels like a gentle hug at the end of the day.

Final Thoughts

Whether your nook is nestled in a corner or carved out of a closet, what matters most is that it reflects your style, your needs, and your intention to slow down and savor life.

So go ahead—claim your space, pile on the pillows, light that candle, and sink into stillness. You deserve a little corner of the world that feels like peace.
