A 90 Year Old Celebrates His Birthday by Soaring Over Fort Myers Beach
A 90-year-old man proved that age doesn’t have to slow you down after parasailing high above Fort Myers Beach to celebrate his birthday, fulfilling a decade-old promise along the way.
The special moment involved Arnold “Sonny” Lokken, a U.S. Navy veteran, and his longtime doctor, Dr. Amy Hilde-Philips. Ten years ago, Lokken made her a simple but meaningful deal: if she helped get him to 90, she would join him in the air for another parasailing adventure.
A Promise Made and Kept
On Saturday, that promise came full circle. Hilde-Philips parasailed alongside Lokken as he marked his 90th birthday, turning the outing into a celebration of life, friendship, and staying active at any age.
Hilde-Philips says people often ask what motivates her, and she always comes back to that promise. For her, it wasn’t just a casual remark, it was something she fully intended to honor.
Sonny’s Love for Adventure
Parasailing isn’t new for Lokken. More than ten years ago, he first tried it with his granddaughter in Hawaii. He later repeated the experience for his 80th birthday in Clearwater, making it a tradition tied to major milestones.
Lokken jokes that many people his age prefer staying in a recliner, but that lifestyle never appealed to him. He believes staying active and seeking adventure is what keeps life exciting.
Despite vision challenges, Sonny still rides a four-wheeler nearly every day and maintains an upbeat, determined attitude. According to Hilde-Philips, that mindset, and the way he takes care of himself, plays a huge role in his longevity and energy.
Family, Gratitude, and a Birthday in the Sky
Lokken had nothing but praise for Hilde-Philips, calling her a top-tier doctor who has cared for him consistently for two decades. When his granddaughter suggested parasailing again for his 90th birthday, he immediately agreed, with one condition: his doctor had to join.
His family made it happen, arranging for Hilde-Philips to travel with them from Minnesota to Southwest Florida. Along with his granddaughter Kaylee, the trio headed out into the Gulf with Paradise Parasail, where they were lifted high above the water under clear blue skies.
Even while airborne, Sonny kept his sense of humor, joking about hoping for a smooth landing far away from any sharks below.
A Hero’s Welcome Back on the Beach
The ride ended safely, and the group returned to cheers, applause, and curious onlookers along Fort Myers Beach. Family members snapped photos while others stopped to ask about the celebration.
Kaylee said the experience had been talked about and planned for a long time, making it especially meaningful when it finally happened. For her, it was the perfect way to celebrate such an important milestone.
As for Sonny, he had only one small complaint, he wished the ride lasted longer. Sharing the moment with his granddaughter and his doctor, he said, couldn’t have been better.
