Royal Insiders Reveal Will and Kate’s Unexpected Sleeping Setup

Prince William and Kate Middleton have quietly broken from royal tradition in a way few people realize. While many assume senior royals sleep in grand upstairs chambers, the Prince and Princess of Wales have chosen a very different setup at Kensington Palace.

Unlike previous generations of royals, William and Kate do not use the upstairs bedrooms at Kensington Palace. Reports indicate that the couple lives and sleeps in a ground-floor residence known as Apartment 1A.

This choice sets them apart from long-standing royal norms, where upper floors were typically reserved for primary sleeping quarters. Instead, their living arrangement prioritizes practicality and comfort over formality.

Apartment 1A Is Far From a Typical Apartment

Despite its modest-sounding name, Apartment 1A is anything but small. The residence spans around 20 rooms across four floors and includes features such as a private gym, an elevator, and accommodations for nine staff members.

Royal residences at Kensington Palace are commonly referred to as apartments, which can be misleading. Rather than modern flats, these spaces function more like large, interconnected townhouses built around multiple courtyards within the palace grounds.

A Palace Designed Like Joined Townhouses

Kensington Palace is structured around three main courtyards, with each residence resembling a red-brick terrace house. While the buildings are connected, each apartment operates as a separate home, offering both privacy and proximity within the royal complex.

This layout allows families like William and Kate’s to enjoy a more domestic environment while still remaining within a historic royal setting.

Although they continue to maintain their Kensington Palace residence, Prince William and Kate Middleton have recently relocated to Forest Lodge in Windsor Great Park with their three children.

The move is widely seen as a symbolic step into a new phase of family life, reflecting a desire for greater independence while still honoring royal responsibilities.

    Putting Family Life First

The decision to move was reportedly driven by a desire to give their children a more grounded and normal upbringing. Having seen firsthand how demanding royal life can be, William and Kate are said to be intentional about setting boundaries.

While they remain deeply committed to their public roles, they are also willing to step back when necessary to protect their family’s well-being. Their living arrangements, both in London and Windsor, reflect a modern approach to royal life that balances duty with personal priorities.
