You may discover that you face new challenges as you go through the aging process in life. It’s perfectly normal to have new experiences, concerns, and issues during different phases of your life. But in this article, I am going to share 24 ways you can live your best life as you age. I will be focusing on people who are transitioning from their mid-life years to their older years.
This is the most comprehensive list of things you can do to live your best life as you go through the aging process. To the best of my knowledge, no one has discovered a way to reverse aging yet, but we can certainly slow down the aging process by living happier, healthier lives!
Mid-life can vary somewhat depending on who you are talking to — but generally it’s from your late-thirties through early-sixties. You’ve probably known people who have had a mid-life crisis during these years. In fact, we probably go through many mid-life crises at various points during these years, but there are things we can do to help prevent these crises from becoming full-blown problems that can make your life very complicated.
You know what they say — aging isn’t for sissies. It’s never too early to start practicing these life-changing habits! So let’s look at 24 ways to LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE as you age!

What Does Live Your Best Life Mean?
Before we move on, let’s take a moment to clarify what it means to live your best life. Although, to be honest, I’m not sure there is a simple answer.
I’ve thought a lot about this question, and researched a lot as well. It seems there are lots of ideas out there, depending on perspective. So I’m going to share an answer that I came up with based on my own personal experiences and my research about “What Does Live Your Best Life Mean?”
Live your best life means to live in a manner that makes you (and your loved ones) happy and healthy in this world. It means doing things you hope to do someday NOW instead of waiting until someday. It means not waiting until a special occasion to wear your best jewelry or use your best china. Live your best life means developing and maintaining a positive mindset that allows you to meet your fullest potential in a way that makes you (and your loved ones) proud. And it means intentionally reflecting about your personal growth and mindset enough to actively create a life of wellness, goodness, and peace — at any age or stage of life. ~ Susan Ballinger
What live your best life doesn’t mean? It doesn’t mean doing what you want to do ALL THE TIME or thinking only of yourself. It isn’t an excuse to be irresponsible and immature. And it isn’t just a trendy phrase to use when you’re trying to impress someone or attempt to say something relevant. So don’t overuse the phrase to make yourself feel more important — use it to actively and intentionally LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE!

24 Ways to Live Your Best Life at Any Stage of Life
Happy aging is healthy aging. It takes away the stress and anxiety of “getting older” and instead shifts the focus on the joy and fulfillment you can get from the natural aging process. Your life can be wonderful at any age with the right mindset and healthy habits.
Of course, you want to incorporate positive, healthy habits into your life in order to live your best life at any age or stage of life. But you also want to avoid negative, unhealthy habits that will make your life more complicated. This list of 24 ways to LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE as you age will include some habits to avoid, as well as some habits to incorporate into your life.
Also, it’s not included below as a separate item because it’s an important part of many of these recommendations — but KEEP SMILING through all ages and stages of life! It’s good for the body, mind, and soul! And don’t forget to develop and maintain a positive mindset as part of living your best life! Don’t waste time on negative behaviors and thoughts! 1. Avoid Changing Too Much, Too Fast
This is probably the most common mistake people make when they’re working on daily habits and trying to switch up their routine. It’s great that you want to make a lot of changes in your life in order to age gracefully and enjoy your life, but if you try to change 10 things at once, none of them are going to stick.
It is best to change 1-2 things at a time, turn them into daily habits, and then don’t add in anything else new until you get so accustomed to those habits. This way, you don’t have to think about those anymore and you can focus on some new healthy habits that will help you life your best life as you age.
2. Don’t Be Too Hard on Yourself
Do you find that when you try to establish a new healthy habit or change part of your routine, and if you miss it one day, you are really hard on yourself? If so, you need to know that this kind of guilt isn’t going to help you become a healthier or happier person.
It is good to create a daily routine and make healthy improvements in your life, but it should always have some flexibility and you should not be too hard on yourself while making changes. Understand that things happen, schedules change, and sometimes you’re too tired to wake up early, or just don’t feel like doing yoga. There is nothing wrong with that! Just make sure you know why you have missed out on a part of your routine and remind yourself that “it’s okay.”
3. Don’t Force Habits That Don’t Benefit You
It is also important to consider the type of habits you are trying to add to your daily routine, and the reason why you chose them, especially as you go through the aging process to live your best life.
In some cases, habits you can’t stick to aren’t necessarily not good for people in general, but might not be good for you. If you want to exercise every day, but you hate the gym, then trying to force yourself to go to the gym every morning isn’t going to last long, and certainly won’t make you happy.
Instead, choose an exercise or movement that you enjoy, and add that to your routine. You don’t have to follow what you see online or what your friends are doing. Customize your routine to fit your own needs and interests. My favorite exercise is going to the warm indoor pool and doing some stretches, yoga, and dance activities.
4. Allow Flexibility in Your Life
As mentioned previously, you want to have a mindset of flexibility about your routine while you are making changes to live your best life through the aging process. If your healthy aging habits are too strict, or prevent you from enjoying special aspects of your life, it isn’t going to last long. You will give up quickly! This is a very common mistake people make when they are too rigid and turn an innocent daily routine into a punishment. Be flexible, be open-minded, and be compassionate toward yourself!
Additionally, flexible thinking is going to be your best friend as you age. It will help you learn to accept changes that are taking place. It will also help you become more resilient during uncertain times.
5. Develop and Maintain a Daily Routine
Daily routines and habits are more popular than ever before — not because they are a new concept — but because of the benefits to your emotional health and overall wellbeing.

6. Stay Active no Matter Your Age
For your physical health, you also want to get regular exercise. Again, you don’t need to put too much pressure on yourself to spend hours at the gym or run a marathon. Regular exercise a few days a week is all that is required, unless you have more specific fitness goals.
Consider forms of movement that you enjoy and make you happy. You should be excited about your exercise, not dread it. For you, this might mean a yoga class with your friends, going for a walk or riding a bicycle, or doing workouts at home on your treadmill or with a kettlebell. Start making small changes and adding in more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dairy, lean protein, and drinking lots of water. When you eat a nutritious diet, you stay healthy and can help reduce the risk of several age-related diseases.
8. Get Better Sleep
It is a common misconception that as you get older, your sleep needs change. But the fact is, people tend to start experiencing more insomnia as they get older. It isn’t that you don’t need as much sleep, but it is harder for you to get it.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, older adults find it harder to go to sleep, stay asleep, and they have very interrupted sleep — often waking up multiple times a night. This can affect everything from your emotional health to your energy levels and stress levels.

On the other hand, if you are alone a lot, you may want to consider activities you can do with others — like going to a nearby park or attending a local craft class.
–Your Favorite Pasttimes
What are some activities you used to love doing, but haven’t done in a while? Think about what you used to find a lot of joy in, such as crafts, watching certain types of movies, a form of exercise, going to a certain fun place in your area, or spending time with people you haven’t seen in a while. What were your favorite pasttimes?
Even if you can’t do the exact same activity, it might lead you in the right direction. For example, if you used to knit a lot, but have stopped because of arthritis, you might find that your soul is missing a creative outlet. Maybe you have always loved macramé and want to learn how to make your own, or you would love to take a pottery class. There is no better time than now to live your best life and enjoy activities you’ve always wanted to do!

When you are improving your daily routine in order to be happy and fulfilled as you age, it is important that you consider your mental health and your physical health. Mental health — from reducing stress and changing your mindset — should be given just as much care as introducing diet and exercise for your physical health.
Stress can affect anyone at any age, but it can take an even bigger toll on you as you age. It can impact your mental health just as much as your physical health, so it is essential that you get a grip on it now rather than later. While you are busy learning to live your best life through healthy daily habits, you should add some stress-relieving activities to your normal routine. Some ideas include:

So it’s essential to start letting go of negativity. This can actually be one of the most difficult parts of changing your mindset, but also a very important part! You need to let go of ALL negativity.
If you have a lot of demands in your life that create stress and negativity (at any age or stage of life), it’s important to decide if those demands are worth keeping or not. You might need to start saying NO to people who ask too much of you; or you may need to delegate more tasks to others. Or maybe letting go for you means forgiving and forgetting something from the past, and giving yourself more time to practice quality self-care habits.

Another tip for improving your mindset as you age is to use positive affirmations. These might seem silly, but when used on a regular basis, they hold a lot of power. A positive affirmation is a thought or phrase that is positive, uplifting, and hopeful. It can help you maintain a good mindset throughout the day. Did you know your brain learns to believe what it hears? So if you say positive affirmations on a regular basis, your brain will start to believe how wonderful you are!

If you are afraid of having memory problems, or struggling with diseases like Alzheimer’s or Dementia, the journal can help tremendously. This is probably not the first time you have heard of a bucket list, but if you have never had one, or not focused much on the one you already have, there has never been a better time to revisit the idea. A bucket list is simply a list of things you want to accomplish in your life. Bucket list ideas can be places you want to visit, friends you want to catch up with, activities you want to learn, or things you want to get done in your life.
Everyone has a different bucket list and a different reason for having one. As you age and move into your later years, it is a great idea to work on your bucket list. It helps you to focus on your goals, find fulfillment in your life, and really enjoy life for what it is. Your bucket list also gives you passion and purpose in life — and you can start it at any age or stage of life so you have it to work on forever! Here are a few tips if you haven’t started your bucket list yet:
–Follow Your Passions
To start working on your bucket list, think about what your passions are. What activities bring you the most joy? What do you turn to when you have a day off to do whatever you want? What is your favorite form of self-care?
The answers to these types of questions usually lead to your biggest passions in life. Maybe when you have a weekend off, you enjoy going on a road trip because you love to travel. Or you are someone who enjoys having family over whenever you get the chance. Or maybe your favorite activities are creative — like drawing, writing, or creating something at home.
Think about your passions, then think what activities align with them — and you’ll be ready to start your bucket list!
–What Have You Always Wanted to Do?
This is the easiest way to start working on your bucket list. Think of things big and small that have been on your “life bucket list” that you haven’t yet done. Maybe there is a place you want to travel to, an activity like skydiving or scuba diving you always wanted to try, or a local annual event you seem to miss every year.
Your bucket list is personal to you and may include a wide range of things as small as books you want to read, to big things like owning your first house or buying a new car.
–Start Crossing Items Off
Once you have compiled a bucket list, start figuring out what you can do soon, and what takes a little more planning. This might include saving money for a trip, or finding a friend to do a particular activity with you. Pin it up on your wall, put it in your planner, and really focus on crossing items off your list.
20. Keep Up with Friends and Family
As mentioned previously, as you get older you might feel inclined to isolate yourself, especially if you deal with anxiety or depression, are not sleeping well, or you have physical ailments that make it harder to do what you were once able to do. But this is even more reason why you should get out there and live your life, focusing on the social aspect of your daily routine. It is essential to maintain your social health as you live your best life during the aging process! Here are some ways to work on your social health and keep enjoying your social life in a safe, but fulfilling way.
–Catch up with Old Friends
One way to add social time into your life as an older adult is to catch up with old friends. It can be hard to do this in the beginning, especially if you haven’t spoken to old friends in a long time. Just start with one person who you would love to catch up with, and give them a call or reach out on social media. Ask how they have been doing, and invite them out for something simple, like coffee or a lunch date.
Get into the habit of seeing friends on a regular basis. It doesn’t have to be daily. But consider spending time with your closest friends once or twice a week as you live your best life!
–Make New Friends as an Older Adult
It isn’t easy to make new friends at any age, but as an older adult, you might feel like it’s too late. But that isn’t true at all! You just need to think about where other like-minded people around your age might spend their time. This might be a local college that has crafting classes, walking by the harbor or lake near your house, sitting at the park while reading or sketching, or going to a nearby café for lunch.
Strike up conversation with someone who seems to enjoy the same things you do, or join a community club or organization with other people who have a similar lifestyle. Have neighbors you haven’t met? Go introduce yourself!
–More Family Time
The other social part of your daily routine and new habits is related to family. This will depend on your family dynamics, but the more effort you put into making plans and reaching out to your close relatives, the more you will start to build a foundation for spending more time together.
It is really easy to lose touch even with family that lives close by. Sometimes, it just takes one person to reach out more and make plans to spend time together, plan parties, or just ask to meet for dinner once in a while. There is no reason that person can’t be you!
21. See Your Doctor and Dentist Regularly
Visit your doctor for preventive services, not just when you’re sick. This can prevent disease or find it early, when treatment is more effective. Make sure that you get regular checkups and the health screenings that you need. You should know which medicines you are taking, why you need them, and how to take them properly. Visit your dentist regularly to ensure a healthy mouth and teeth.
22. Drink Plenty of Water
Your body needs water. We’ve been hearing that our entire lives. But just as a reminder, these are some important reasons why you need to drink plenty of water if you want to live your best life at any age or stage of life:

I won’t harp on these habits because I know addiction is difficult and this can be a sensitive subject. Just as a reminder, regular smoking and drinking increases your risk of several different types of cancer, lung disease, heart disease, and more. There is growing evidence that suggests these substances might be especially dangerous when used together. They are known to shorten life expectancy. Do your best to quit both.
24. Schedule Time for Adventures
Traveling and fun adventures are an essential component of personal growth, health, and wellness at any age. It is also one of 12 important aspects of a balanced life. It enriches your life and promotes social wellbeing. It reduces the risk of depression. It also increases your ability to understand and empathize with other cultures.
